Nestled among rolling vineyards overlooking the scenic Douro River, Six Senses Douro Valley invites guests to escape to Portugal’s breathtaking scenery wine region Experience wellness-focused luxury all at the same time. After choosing Portugal as a couple’s holiday destination, we added Six Senses Douro Valley to our list to relax and unwind after a full 5 days of sightseeing in Lisbon and Porto. Here is our Six Senses Douro Valley review.
Often cited as one of the best resorts in Portugal, this picturesque hotel is conveniently located 75 minutes’ drive from Porto Airport and has a secluded location perfect for relaxing. As you drive along the winding road leading to the resort, you’ll see a 19th-century manor house that has been transformed into a high-end resort.

Upon check-in, we were greeted by a tantalizing tradition: the ringing of a bell, which once marked meal time for vineyard workers. Today, this ritual symbolizes your intention to set a restorative and fulfilling stay.

Sophisticated guest rooms and inspiring retreat spaces

Most rooms overlook the river or vineyards, and some have garden views. We chose to stay in the Vineyard Deluxe Room which came with a super king size bed, soaking tub, rain shower, large private terrace with vineyard views and a generous welcome treat of fruit, chocolates, nuts and of course wine and port.
The hotel is filled with beautiful and unique spaces, including the Alchemy Bar, where you can create a personalized blend of herbs, flowers, and spices to create a balm or exfoliating scrub; the “Wine Library,” where you can easily sample premium Portuguese varieties with your room key; a stone community table for wine tasting; a nook to read on oversized leather chairs; an afternoon tea bar; rare.
One of our favorite bars is one that offers great cocktails and has a different type of live music every night. Tucked away in the back is a pool table for you to start or end your evening.

Food experience
The main dining experience here is Vale de Abraão, a beautiful dining room with a walk-in fireplace, 18th-century blue tiles, cork ceilings and granite floors. They also have an open concept kitchen area with a wood burning oven. Here you can enjoy the chef’s tasting menu or order a la carte – both made with the freshest ingredients, alongside an exciting seasonal menu. On warm evenings, you can dine on the outdoor terrace with views of the vineyards.
Our favorite dinner was the BBQ in the summer garden (open seasonally when the weather is nice). We sat outside at a community table under the stars and enjoyed the daily chef’s tasting menu featuring the freshest grilled meats and fish. Other dining options include the Wine Library and Terrace, Quinta Bar and Lounge, where you can enjoy snacks and drinks by the outdoor pool.

Outdoor activities in Douro Valley
The beautiful outdoor infinity pool is a great place to escape the summer heat, and you can enjoy food, drinks and special treats poolside (freshly made peanut butter ice cream, anyone?) With the stunning vineyards and Douro River as a backdrop, every activity feels like you’re immersed in Portugal’s natural beauty.
For adventurers, Six Senses Douro Valley offers a variety of outdoor activities. Guests can paddle or kayak along the tranquil river, explore the area on a mountain bike, or simply enjoy the scenery on a leisurely walk or hike through the lush grounds.

We chose to attend the Port Wine Tasting at the Deli to learn about the historic Douro Valley wines and Port wine. This includes history and an understanding of the true art of the vintner, the type of harvest and aging and how those choices change the final product. Most memorably, we rented a vintage boat for two and sailed down the Douro River. You can pre-stock your boat with a picnic and drinks. It was so picturesque and peaceful that we extended the cruise by an hour and continued down the river. We heard you can book this at sunset too and I’m sure it was a breathtaking experience.

Wellness and Relaxation: The Ultimate Spa Experience
Finally, no Six Senses experience is complete without a trip to the spa to focus on health and rejuvenation. Choose from a wide range of massages, facials, sound therapy, yoga and their signature packages, which include multi-day treatments that can be customized to suit your needs. All guests have access to spa facilities and a fully equipped gym. Children are allowed to use the swimming pool under adult supervision during designated times.

Located in the beautiful airy atrium, the indoor spa pool area features a heated pool with hydrotherapy jets to relieve muscle tension in the legs, neck and back, underwater music to soothe your mood and a cold plunge to rejuvenate you. Additionally, there are infrared and thermal saunas, steam rooms, herbal rooms and Himalayan salt rooms. I decided to have an Ayurvedic massage (one of their specialties) and my husband opted for a head and neck massage. We left wishing we had gone a day earlier as the treatment was so good we would book again!
