When considering a family trip to South and Central America, countries like these costa rica, Ecuadorand Colombia Probably the first choice. So I wanted to know how Guatemala stacks up against these iconic destinations like Galapagos IslandsAmazon, Machu Picchu, etc.
I found that Guatemala should not be ignored. This Guatemala travel guide will highlight our family experiences and why we think this is a must-visit place. In fact, according to my teenage daughter, Casa Santo Domingo in Antigua will now be the venue for her wedding, with its beautiful on-site chapel and museum providing the perfect backdrop.
For many years, my husband and my father came to Guatemala for excursions to do deep sea sport fishing at Sailfish Oasis Lodge. Our first family trip to Guatemala. My teenage son went fishing with him and I know my husband was excited to share this moment with him. This is a great place for a multi-generational experience as well as families with avid fishing.
how to get there
The best way to get to Guatemala City is to take a direct flight to La Aurora International Airport from U.S. airports, including JFK and Miami. There isn’t much to do in Guatemala City, but if you need to stay overnight, the Westin Camino Real is one of the best places to stay. (It offers a nicer pool area for families than the InterContinental.) The next stop on our Guatemala itinerary included a trip to Antigua, just an hour’s drive from Guatemala City.
Driving into Antigua we quickly fell in love with the town, its brightly colored houses and its natural beauty. Antigua was the former capital of Guatemala, but due to the Santa Maria earthquake of 1776, the capital was moved to Guatemala City. These volcanoes in Antigua are a highlight and my teenagers love watching the ash and smoke spew from the tops of the volcanoes. In fact, one of our favorite family memories involves roasting marshmallows at the top of a mountain. One of the great things about Antigua is that it is a very walkable city. Therefore, we chose to stay at Casa Museo Santo Domingo in the heart of the city.
Hotel Casa Museo Santo Domingo
The earthquake severely damaged the Casa Museo Hotel in Santo Domingo, which was once one of the largest monasteries in the United States. In 1989, restoration work began and a unique hotel experience has been integrated into its framework. First, the restoration and protection of this important historical site has become a priority.
One thing I would like to add to my Guatemala travel guide is to add a second level five star luxury hotel experience to that, because it is an amazing experience. Guests of the hotel can relax on sunbeds set atop ancient stonework or sleep in the former convent room with its original fireplace. They have restored it beautifully to provide you with a warm place to retreat and all modern amenities. The heated pool area gives the feel of a Tuscan countryside resort.
On-site facilities
We have great weather, February is the dry season with daytime temperatures in the high 70s. The nights were cool and comfortable so loved the heated pool. (Most Guatemala travel guides recommend avoiding the rainy season from May to October.)
The on-site restaurant offers a fusion of local Guatemalan and American cuisine that is suitable for all members of the family. The breakfast buffet offers the same items as well as a variety of fresh juices.
I also spent a morning relaxing at the spa, soaking in the spacious hot tub and pool. Afterwards, I sat on a lounge chair admiring the view of the volcano and sipping a glass of fresh juice.
Things to do in Antigua
If you plan to visit Antigua for 3 to 4 days, you will have plenty of time to explore. Some of the best activities include outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, ATVs, and city tours on chick buses. In addition, in-city experiences such as chocolate making and jade jewelry are also popular.
You can also add an out-of-town tour with a local guide, such as a coffee tour. Even if you’re not a coffee drinker like me, don’t miss the coffee. As a devout tea drinker, I had a hard time being persuaded to try a cup of the bitter liquid. But a sip of the hotel’s local coffee made me realize what I might have been missing.
My daughter and I took the Jade Jewelry Course Emerald House. We had the best time turning a slate into a beautiful pendant necklace. We also walked up the Hill of Crosses, one of the city’s main attractions. This hike offers panoramic views of the town and volcano, as well as great family photos.
future plans
For a future trip to Guatemala, we plan to explore Lake Atitlan. It is considered the most beautiful lake in the world and a popular destination in South America. We also wanted to visit the many small towns around the lake. Of course, our next Guatemala travel itinerary will probably include a wedding dress at some point.
