The big splash is Six Flags Amusement Park in Qidiya Combination drop tower/water ride.

This family-friendly thrill ride features a 20-seat platform that is pulled 15 meters into the air before dropping into the pool below.

The bottom of the platform has a sharply angled base specifically designed to send huge waves of water into the air when it hits the pool. While most of the waves shoot outward, a fair amount of the water rises straight up and washes back onto the platform and its passengers.

Apparently, the rider’s level of wetness is configurable, and in the summer they’re likely to get soaked to the bone, while on a cold winter night they’ll be less wet.

While the ride was a spectacle for those watching, it had some design flaws for those on board. Most notably, after the fall, the operator had to wait a long time for the water waves to drain back into the pool before releasing the restraints, which made the ending a bit anticlimactic.

Although it’s called a “big splash,” the wave of water created when the rider lunges downward—at least in the winter configuration—isn’t as huge and impressive as it should be. It does save the rider from getting completely soaked, but it creates a less all-encompassing dramatic flood.
