Five ways to support your immunity and skin from within this winter

Five ways to support your immunity and skin from within this winter

For those who aren’t chasing the sun this season – spending the winter back home in the Southern Hemisphere, or opting for skiing instead of European sunshine, winter has well and truly arrived. There’s a lot to love about it: the bonfires lit before dusk, the slow mornings, the permission to linger, the permission to stay indoors. But this season is very demanding on both the skin and the immune system. The cold air outside and the heating system inside can wear down your skin, while your immune system quietly does more work throughout the year.

Rather than resisting winter, adapt to it. The smallest rituals performed consistently often yield the greatest results, supporting skin and health from the inside out.

Start your day with an immune supplement

Some rituals endure for a long time.

What the body needs when it wakes up is warmth and gentle hydration, not a cup of coffee on an empty stomach. This is a truth that health practitioners have long understood. The answer is a delightfully simple immune tonic: warm water with the juice of half a lemon, a dash of apple cider vinegar, raw honey, freshly grated ginger and turmeric, a pinch of cayenne pepper and a pinch of black pepper. As a health enthusiast and a staunch tryer of many new rituals, this is one I swear by and do every morning.

There are more sophisticated ways to start a winter morning. There are few better. Here’s what each ingredient does in a glass:

lemon – Supports the liver, which is essential for hormone detoxification, while providing vitamin C to boost immunity.

ginger – A powerful anti-inflammatory agent with prokinetic properties that gently awakens the digestive system and promotes intestinal motility.

turmeric – “A cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine and one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory agents,” explains Shand. “It reduces oxidative stress and supports the body’s natural immune defenses.”

black pepper — Turmeric’s essential companion, enhancing the absorption of its active compound, curcumin. “Black pepper can increase curcumin’s bioavailability by 2,000 percent,” Shand points out.

chili — A warming dose of capsaicin to stimulate circulation and gently boost metabolism, bringing tonic warmth throughout the body.

raw honey — Natural antibacterial agents, antioxidants and prebiotics. “Raw honey helps feed beneficial gut bacteria and supports intestinal immune connections,” says Shand. Since about 70% of our immune cells reside in the gut, this connection is more important than most immune cells.

Warm and hydrating

Winter has a way of masking dehydration. When we’re cold, we simply drink less water, even as the heated interior quietly draws moisture from the skin and body.

Substitute water and warmth: a pot of loose leaf tea to last all afternoon, bone broth to ladle into cups, or a slow-cooked soup that’s both nourishing and comforting. Tea, in particular, offers therapeutic benefits that go far beyond hydration: Antioxidant-rich sencha tea can sustain you through the morning, some herbs can get you through the afternoon, and a cup of chamomile at nightfall means relaxation. Hot drinks warm the body from the inside, gently care for your winter digestive system in a way that no iced drink can, and allow you to sip slowly and steadily for a good hydration effect. These little rituals make hydration feel instinctive rather than intentional. Since the skin is the last organ to receive the water we drink, it’s often the first place where good hydration (or lack thereof) occurs.

Dry yourself before bathing

Dry body brushing is among the oldest traditions of European bathing culture. It works, and it only takes five minutes.

Before getting in the shower, use a natural-bristle brush on dry skin in long, heart-directed sweeps—firm enough to feel, but gentle enough to make you want to repeat the next day. The rewards are twofold. Circulation quickens and winter’s bleak veneer sets in, but the ritual itself settles the mind like few morning rituals do: establishing a pause in the day before it has any say. Finish with a hot shower and while still warm, press a thick moisturizer or hydrating oil into your skin and prepare to drink.

If done consistently, it imparts a quiet glowing quality to the skin that is often associated with spending a week somewhere rejuvenating rather than a normal morning at home.

Make facial massage a nightly ritual

Touch is something we outsource to professionals but forget to do it ourselves.

Whether using your fingertips or a gua sha stone, spend five minutes massaging from the center of your face outwards and upwards, following the natural lymphatic pathways. Start by cleansing your face to eliminate the fatigue of the day, then apply a few drops Epicutis Oil Cleanser As a second cleanse, formulated with calming hinoki, hydrating white mist seeds and sunflower seeds to melt residue, it nourishes the skin and strengthens the barrier while giving the stone the slipperiness it needs. Lagaia’s face and body stoneCarved from pure meteorite and designed in collaboration with practitioners to promote lymphatic flow, they are the most popular. Once the massage is complete, a splash of water transforms the oil into a gentle cleansing lather, so the ritual ends where cleansing begins.

Gua Sha relieves tension built up throughout the day, improves blood circulation, and allows serums and moisturizers to be absorbed more effectively. Like many worthwhile rituals, the benefits are apparent almost immediately—less puffiness, softer features, and skin that looks like it’s been treated to a spa treatment.

Seal everything in

All of the above can be ruined overnight by dry air – mountain air, for those heading to the slopes, is the most skilled thief.

Gently press a rich night cream or nourishing facial oil into damp skin to create a protective layer that keeps moisture where it should be until morning. Save sheer lotions for spring; it’s a season that’s all about texture, weight and generosity—and most importantly, formulas that protect the skin’s barrier and provide deep hydration. Sodashi Nourishing Repair Treatment A suitably indulgent option – packed with carrot root and centella asiatica, it supports collagen production while you sleep.

And don’t forget about the rest of the body. After bathing, apply a thin layer of massage cream A blissful blend of subtle energies On the skin that needs it most during the colder months, work your way up from your feet to your heart, down your arms to your heart, and then clockwise around your abdomen before going to bed. Think restful sleep and wake up with hydrated, radiant skin.

Maybe that’s the real luxury of winter – not escaping it, but learning to enjoy it in a different way. A cup of something warm, an unhurried ritual in front of the bathroom mirror, richer textures and a slower evening. Sometimes taking care of yourself doesn’t mean doing more, it just means putting more thought into the season you’re in for recovery.
