How Disney World cast members maintain more than 260 acres at ESPN Wide World of Sports

Let’s play ball! But what’s a game without a venue? Here at Walt Disney World, we have a team of actors working on the game—literally! The Sportscape (Sports + Landscape) team maintains over 30 venues year-round covering over 260 acres ESPN Wide World of Sports Center It will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year.

Whether professional or amateur athletes take to the field, the complex is always ready to host nearly 300,000 athletes and 800,000 spectators at more than 50 different events each year. For nearly three decades, this has been possible because cast members have combined their love of Disney and sports with their passion for grounds maintenance.

Actors care about the fields

Meet John Bolger, a 36-year veteran who has been expertly maintaining ballparks since the first baseball game in 1997. “I’ve been here since opening day and it’s been amazing to see the sports center grow from a few courts to over 30 courts today,” he said.

For John, working at Disney is more than just a career. This is personal. Inspired by his mother, an actress, John knew early on what he wanted to be. “I love Disney because of her and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” he said.

It’s not just John who oversees 17 multipurpose fields, 12 baseball and softball fields, a baseball field and a track and field. This is an entire team led by Maryanne Baglos, turf manager and horticulture manager for lawn and ornamental pest management. “What we do here is really a team effort,” Marian said. “All of our actors bring their personal experiences and work together to make the entire complex beautiful.”

Throughout her 27-year Disney career, Marianne has found joy in crafting spaces for guests, and as a leader, she loves inspiring cast members by celebrating their passion and artistry. “While I’m proud of their craft, the actors are proud of it,” Marianne said.

For actors, ESPN Sports World Just like home. That’s certainly the case for 40-year actor and set manager Willie Congrove. “I have a great time with my kids when they play here,” Wiley said. “We work hard to make each area as safe and perfect as possible so others can enjoy coming here.”
