Vulcan to the Sky Trust to host Cold War documentary premiere and lecture on 21 February

The Vulcan Sky Trust in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, will host a Cold War-themed evening on Saturday 21 February, which will include the premiere of a new documentary and a speech by a former RAF officer with first-hand experience of the era. Movie, “BRIXMIS: Cold War Pirates – Fire Bar Incident“, centered on the 1966 Soviet Yak-28 crash”Fire it“The plane crashed into Lake Havel in British territory in Berlin. Although officially an aircraft recovery operation, the incident quickly became an intelligence opportunity for Britain during one of the most tense periods of the Cold War.”

Restoration work was under the responsibility of BRIXMIS, the Commander-in-Chief of British Soviet Forces in Germany. Throughout the process, British personnel were operating close to Soviet forces and had limited time to process the wreckage before it could be returned. In the years since, the incident has been viewed as one of the most audacious intelligence moments of the Cold War, even though it was a story many had never heard.

Following the screening, Air Force Commodore Edward J. Jalen (Ret.) will talk about his own Cold War service. Jalen flew Vulcan bombers as part of the UK’s nuclear deterrent force and later served as Assistant Air Attaché in Moscow. His speech will focus on the role of airpower, intelligence and diplomacy during the East-West confrontation. His presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

Doors open at 6:00pm, show starts at 6:30pm. The documentary is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., followed by intermission and raffle. Jarron’s speech begins at 8:45 pm and is expected to end around 10:00 pm.
