Environmental pressures are inevitable. But a simple daily care routine containing botanicals, antioxidants, and natural barrier builders can help skin stay healthy and strong.

Fresh air, sunshine…it feels so good to be outside. But the same elements that can bring such joy, such energy, such clarity are not always so kind to our skin. “No matter the time of year, sun, wind, temperature changes, pollution, and even indoor heating and air conditioning put constant stress on the skin barrier,” says Agatha Relota Luczo, founder of Furtuna Skin, a line of luxury skincare products made with wild botanicals and olive oil. “The reality is that your skin doesn’t experience circumstances seasonally—it goes through them every day.” It’s dealing with daily stressors that guides your skin’s long-term performance. “When the skin barrier is strong and well-nourished, it is better able to regulate moisture, protect against environmental aggressors, and repair itself effectively,” says Luzzo. “I think about skin the same way I think about land (my husband and I manage an 800-plus-acre organic estate in Sicily): You don’t wait for extreme weather to take care of it. You continually protect and strengthen it so that it can adapt and thrive in each season.”

In summary, healthy skin is resilient because it can withstand a lot of stress. “DNA damage caused by ultraviolet rays and moisture
“Damage from wind and cold, as well as free radicals from pollutants, weaken the structural integrity of the skin,” says naturopathic doctor and founder of Skin by Noor, Salma Hassouna. “Many of the consequences are obvious.
“You’ll see tightness, peeling, redness, irritation, acne or eczema,” says Devin Jaramilo-Marquez, lead holistic esthetician at Los Angeles-based clean beauty space Shop Good. “Restoring balance means replenishing what your skin needs to function properly.”

Products formulated with concentrated botanicals, natural antioxidants and skin-compatible lipids to protect and repair. “On the other hand, unnecessary additives like parabens, phthalates, PFAS add additional stress loads,” Hassouna said.

In practical terms, this means following some basic principles for protecting your skin in any environment, in addition to using mineral sunscreen every day.

Start with gentle cleansing

How you clean is more important than it looks. “These factors already predispose you to transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which can lead to dryness and sensitivity,” says Jaramillo-Marquez. Avoiding overstretching and rough exfoliation can help retain moisture and keep skin calm from the start.

Naana Dr. Boakye Fresh Face Cleanser offers one such calming cleanser that uses oat-derived surfactants and epigenetic fermentation to nourish the skin microbiome, and aloe vera, glycerin, and evening primrose oil to replenish moisture. Vintner’s Daughter Active Renewal Cleanser is another nutrient-dense option. Antioxidant-rich extracts, minerals and botanical oils cleanse skin beautifully while leaving it feeling hydrated.

Using antioxidants as environmental insurance

Free radicals are harmful agents that our skin battles every day. They are produced by UV radiation, pollution and heat and act like balls that damage cell structure and collagen. Antioxidants can control them, neutralizing the damage they cause before titanium compounds do, Hassouna explains.

Skincare founders who work closely with plants understand the protective power of plant compounds. At natural beauty and wellness brand Activist, they harness the powerful antioxidant power of raw medicinal-grade Manuka honey harvested in founder Gabrielle Mirkin’s native New Zealand. “Activist’s Manuka Honey Mask is packed with free radical-fighting vitamins, AB and C, and essential skin minerals to calm inflammation, support regeneration and absorb moisture,” says Mirkin.

Activist’s Green Botanical Serum does the same thing. “This serum has the nourishing benefits of original Manuka oil, wild-crafted from the leaves and branches of the New Zealand Manuka tree,” she says. It also contains algae, blue tansy, kiwi seed and avocado to provide polyphenols, omegas and soothing compounds to help control inflammation while strengthening the barrier.

At Furtuna Skin, Luczo sources botanical ingredients from her family’s organic regenerative farm in Sicily, many of which are extreme plants adapted to survive intense sunlight, wind, and drought by producing high concentrations of polyphenols and antioxidants. Luczo explains that when applied to the skin, these same compounds help neutralize free radicals, calm inflammation, and improve hydration during environmental changes. The other star of her gorgeous formula is extra-virgin olive oil (which she recommends applying topically and ingesting), also from her land. “Olive oil has a lipid profile similar to that of the skin, making it easily absorbed and providing many protective nutrients,” says Luzzo. She incorporates this ingredient into Furtuna Skin’s face and eye serums, along with anchusa azurea. “Anchusa is a wild Mediterranean plant and one of the richest in antioxidants, proven to prevent 100 percent of free radical damage,” says Luczo. “Combined with anchusa, the formula includes collagen-supporting chicory, vitamin E-rich asparagus, hydrating beets and moisture barrier-enhancing mallow.”

Strengthen skin barrier

The strength of the outermost layer determines how well the skin retains moisture and remains stable under daily exposure. When Hassouna began formulating Skin by Noorishing Face Serum, it was all about barrier support. “Research on date palm flower pollen, an ancient plant, revealed its benefits in moisturizing and controlling inflammation, two key factors in maintaining barrier integrity,” she said. That’s why it became the main ingredient in her fortifying serum, which delivers date palm flower pollen in its cleanest form without any synthetics.

At Furtuna Skin, the above-mentioned extra virgin olive oil is the ointment. BiPhase Moisturizing Oil uses this ingredient as its structural base, paired with olive leaf water to replenish moisture and strengthen the skin’s barrier against daily environmental exposure. “I often describe extra virgin olive oil as both protective and intelligent,” says Luzzo. “It not only protects the skin; it also improves its ability to adapt.” The oil and serum are part of its Soundbath range, which means using sound rather than heat to gently extract actives to maintain their full potency.

Alternatively, Mother Science Molecular Origins Barrier Repair Moisturizer uses malasezin, a naturally occurring antioxidant that helps restore barrier function by supporting the skin’s own structural protein and lipid balance. The cream forms a hydrating seal that’s easily absorbed, strengthening skin during the daily bombardment.

Of course, barrier care doesn’t stop at the face. “Your body is exposed to the same amount of environmental stressors every day,” says Leah Kirpalani, founder of BEIIN, a line of natural body care based on luxurious, skin-friendly formulas. BEIIN lotion contains beta glucan and colloidal oatmeal for ultra-hydrating benefits. Top it with All-Over Oil, which contains essential lipids from sunflower, camellia, avocado, and squalane-rich oils to build a barrier and reduce moisture loss.

Repaired overnight

Jaramillo-Marquez says that by the end of the day, the skin has absorbed all of the environmental stressors, so the key at night is simplicity and support, rather than aggressive actives. “The skin goes into regeneration mode during sleep,” says Hassouna, “replenishing moisture and calming inflammation.” You want to encourage the natural repair process.

That’s the goal of Bioeffect, an Icelandic manufacturer of natural skin care products that promote regeneration. “These serums provide EGF (epidermal growth factor) produced by the plant grown in barley,” says Sigrún Dögg Gujonsdottir, MD and Chief Research and Development Officer. “Growth factors are naturally occurring signaling proteins in the skin that play a key role in cell renewal and repair. Our barley-produced EGF is biocompatible with human proteins, allowing it to effectively communicate with skin cells and stimulate renewal.” Icelandic Spring Water, some
The world’s purest ingredients form the basis of the formula for irrigating barley plants.

Restoration can come from the mineral-rich water itself. Blue Lagoon Skincare also taps into the geothermal waters of Iceland, using silica (a mineral) and microalgae from the lagoon in its BL+ Complex to support skin structure and promote renewal. In serums and moisturizers, these water-derived actives help skin repair, become more elastic, and better able to withstand the next round of environmental damage.
