TAV Macedonia, the operator of Ohrid Airport, yesterday officially launched the long-awaited upgrade and renovation project worth 2.7 million euros.
The first phase includes renovating the passenger terminal and increasing operational capacity. The area of check-in counters will increase from 6 to 8, increasing the area by 100 square meters. The security check and hand luggage area will be expanded to nearly 200 square meters, the boarding gate area will be expanded to 350 square meters, and the baggage claim area will be expanded to 230 square meters. The project will also introduce new duty-free shops, new escalators and upgraded equipment and technology to ensure safer and more efficient passenger handling.
The passport control area will be expanded to 150 square meters, and the business offices in the restricted area will be renovated to 270 square meters. In addition, the parking area in front of the terminal will be restructured to improve passenger flow. Importantly, the redevelopment will increase the terminal’s capacity by 30% to 40%, allowing the airport to handle more aircraft and passengers during peak times.
The second phase of the project focuses on the expansion and upgrade of the administrative building, with the area increased from 290 square meters to 746 square meters. In addition to TAV Macedonia’s offices and a new staff canteen, the building will also house new facilities for border police and customs as well as dedicated staff parking. The main objective of the project is to relocate administrative functions from the terminal to upgraded administrative facilities, thereby freeing up space within the terminal to better accommodate passenger flow.
The airport will remain fully operational throughout the construction period. Nejat Kurt, general manager of TAV Macedonia, said: “This project will give Ohrid Airport a new look, providing passengers with a more comfortable, efficient and enjoyable travel experience, while improving working conditions for our employees and partner agencies, including the police and customs. We see these activities as an investment in providing a better daily experience for everyone within the airport community.”
